The Art of Writing

As a self confessed internet addict, it was charming yesterday to receive a hand written note from my Mom. She had enclosed some newspaper cuttings; one about a poetry festival, another on a book review and a story about a creature which is reported to be half wild boar and half wolf which is terrorising people in Lancashire.

It was lovely to open such a delightful package full of strange and interesting stories along with her comments, but it was the fact that it was hand written that appealed to me. I felt like a character from a Jane Austin novel as I unfolded the delicate pages and read her words.

She had written it while sitting in Telford Library. I could just picture her sat in a modern building, surrounded by technology while she practised the wonderful and ancient craft of actually putting pen to paper.

  1. Handwritten letters are so special and sadly nowadays so rare so I can understand your 'Jane Austin' feeling Di. But that's your Mum, she's very special, not many Mums would think of doing such a thing.

What a lovely thing to receive and what a lovely post. xx

  2. And how very blessed to still have your Mum and to have a Mum who shares and contributes to your interests.
I miss mine every day and remember her letters, she used to put little drawings into them, and at Easter she used to cook eggs, dying them natural plant colours, and paint delightful water colour pictures on them.:0)

  3. It is lovely to receive a hand-written note isn't it? I still send a couple out from time to time because I think a hand-written note demonstrates that you've invested time and effort in your communication. And here's an interesting thought - if I receive a hand-written note, I often reply with a hand-written note too. So, if more people did this, we'd receive more hand-written notes.

I hope you wrote back to your Mum, thanking her for her hand-written note!

  4. Yes Sue, it is a very special thing and not done very often. I treasure a lot of the things that I have received from her.

Carole, it sounds lovely to get such wonderful and creative things as you did, Mom once sent me a post card when we were actually on holiday together! It was so funny when I arrived home to find an account of what we had done just a few days before.

Simon, yes I do write back in hand quite a lot. I have some very magical little note cards which are a pleasure to write in. Good to hear that so many people feel the same as me.

  5. I love getting hand-written letters - sadly, I get very few these days (and send even fewer - mainly because of my horribel handwriting).

  6. Hi Diane,
I rather enjoy the good old-fashioned way of actually sitting down, grabbing my quill in a candlelit room and coming up with some semblance of musings.
I do a lot of written communication this way, Okay, I use a modern pen and I don't use parchment paper; but I think there is a lot to be said for the personal touch.
I'm really pleased to know that your Mom took the time and the caring to give you a hand- written note.
With respect and kindness, your way, Gary

  7. Hi Suzanne, lovely to hear from you. I agree, my writing is not brilliant, but I have a lovely ink pen which is a pleassure to use so I do enjoy having a go.

Hello Gary, Yes it's quite a magical thing isn't it? I got a calligraphy set for a present and so try to practice as often as I can, so glad you enjoy the wonderful crafting of words in this way too.
    Best wishes

  8. Hi Diane. I arrived here from Suzannes channel. I know what you mean about the surprise of seeing handwritten letters. I remember the feeling of letters arriving through the letter box ...wonderful. I just read at the side here about The Molyneux Stadium. I remember some away matches there supporting my team, who have slipped slightly further down the league tables since then...:-(

  9. Hello Becky, how lovely of you to visit. Yes it's much nicer to get a lovely hand written letter through the letter box than those horrid brown envelopes containing a rejection! I shall certainly continue to send more hand written ones out myself too.
Mom and hubbie are both loyal Wolves supporters which is good as they are not doing brilliant at present.
    Best wishes
    Di
